64 Golf Driving Distance Statistics: Professional and Amateur Data

Golf driving distance statistics range from measured professional-tour drives near 300 yards to sample-based amateur averages below 200 yards. The figures below identify the tour, golfer population, measurement period, and whether the number is observed or modeled.

Professional Tour Driving Distance Statistics

The 2022 Distance Report presents observed tour averages for measured drives. A measured-drive series is not automatically an all-holes average, so the PGA Tour entries below are kept separate from one another.

Tour or series 2003 season 2021 season 2022 season
DP World Tour 286.3 yards 296.9 yards 299.3 yards
PGA Tour, measured holes 285.9 yards 296.2 yards 299.8 yards
PGA Tour, all holes 277.9 yards 289.9 yards 290.5 yards
Japan Golf Tour 279.0 yards 284.8 yards 284.7 yards

The DP World Tour’s reported year-over-year increase from 2021 to 2022 was 2.4 yards, while the PGA Tour measured-hole series rose 3.6 yards. Japan Golf Tour distance fell 0.1 yards over the same period.

Across 2003–2022, the report records a 13.0-yard, or 4.54%, increase for the DP World Tour; a 5.7-yard, or 2.04%, increase for the Japan Golf Tour; and an average annual increase of 0.68 and 0.30 yards respectively.

PGA Tour trend statistics illustrate why definitions matter. The measured-hole series averaged 285.9 yards in 2003, 296.2 in 2021, and 299.8 in 2022, while the all-holes series averaged 277.9, 289.9, and 290.5 yards in those same periods.

The 2022 Distance Report reports a 3.6-yard measured-hole increase and a 0.6-yard all-holes increase from 2021 to 2022. From 2003 to 2022, the measured-hole series increased 13.9 yards, or 4.86%, and the all-holes series increased 12.6 yards, or 4.53%.

PGA Tour series Long-period change Reported annualized change
Measured holes, 2003–2022 13.9 yards; 4.86% 0.73 yards per year
All holes, 2003–2022 12.6 yards; 4.53% 0.66 yards per year

These are series-level comparisons, not evidence that every player gained the same amount. The measured-hole and all-holes numbers should not be combined into one trend line.

Women’s Professional Golf Driving Distance Statistics

Women’s-tour figures in the 2022 Distance Report show measured-drive averages of 245.3 yards for the Ladies European Tour and 249.6 yards for the LPGA Tour in 2003. In 2021, the corresponding averages were 253.8 and 257.2 yards.

Tour 2003 comparison column 2021 2022
Ladies European Tour 245.3 yards 253.8 yards 254.3 yards
LPGA Tour 249.6 yards 257.2 yards 257.1 yards

The Ladies European Tour rose 0.5 yards from 2021 to 2022, while the LPGA Tour fell 0.1 yards. The report gives long-period increases of 9.0 yards, or 3.67%, for the Ladies European Tour and 7.5 yards, or 3.00%, for the LPGA Tour.

The report uses 2004 as the Ladies European Tour comparison baseline even though the displayed table column is labeled 2003; its annualized increase is 0.47 yards per year from that baseline. The LPGA annualized increase is 0.39 yards per year from 2003 onward.

The 2024 LPGA Tour Storylines and Statistics identifies Linn Grant as the 2024 LPGA statistical leader at 262.500 yards per measured drive. That is a leader statistic, not the 2024 field average.

Development and Senior Tour Driving Distance Measurements

Development-tour and senior-tour populations occupy different competitive contexts, so their averages are best read as separate tour measurements. The 2022 Distance Report records the following:

Tour 2003 season 2021 season 2022 season
Korn Ferry Tour 292.3 yards 302.7 yards 307.8 yards
PGA Tour Champions 269.9 yards 275.0 yards 280.3 yards

Korn Ferry Tour distance rose 5.1 yards from 2021 to 2022, and PGA Tour Champions distance rose 5.3 yards. Over 2003–2022, the increases were 15.5 yards, or 5.30%, for the Korn Ferry Tour and 10.4 yards, or 3.85%, for PGA Tour Champions.

The report’s annualized figures are 0.82 yards per year for the Korn Ferry Tour and 0.55 yards per year for PGA Tour Champions. These values are reported annualized comparisons, not independently recalculated estimates.

Amateur Golf Driving Distance by Handicap

Amateur driving distance is more heterogeneous than professional-tour distance. The 2022 Distance Report table covers 1,141 shots in a 2019 R&A/USGA sample of male amateur club golfers; it combines handicap groups and is not a global golfer average.

Male amateur group 2019 average distance
Overall sample 215.6 yards per drive
Handicap below 6 239.2 yards per drive
Handicap 6–12 219.8 yards per drive
Handicap 13–20 200.0 yards per drive
Handicap 21 or higher 176.6 yards per drive

Driver use was 88.2% of shots overall in the 2019 male sample, rising to 96.7% among golfers with handicaps of 21 or higher. Driver-use share is a separate measure from distance and should not be treated as evidence of longer drives.

The 2023 Distance Report summarizes earlier data in which female amateur golfers averaged 148 yards in the 2018 Distance Report. The population and measurement design differ from the 2019 male table, so the figures are not a matched comparison.

Launch Conditions and Scoring Outcomes

Distance is related to several launch variables, but a distance average alone does not describe how a drive was produced. The official USGA article Distance Proposal Includes Model Local Rule for Elite Competitions reports that the PGA Tour averaged 114.6 mph clubhead speed, a 10.3-degree launch angle, and 2,597 rpm of driver spin in 2022.

The same 2022 PGA Tour data gives a mean clubhead speed of 127.5 mph for the fastest 1% of observations and 124.2 mph for the fastest 5%. Those are percentile subgroups, not tour-wide averages.

A peer-reviewed study, A Longitudinal Data Analysis of the Effect of Driving Distance on Scoring Average in Golf, examined repeated annual PGA Tour player-rank data across 33 years, from 1980 through 2012. Its model estimated that scoring average decreased about 0.73 strokes as driving distance increased 33.27 yards longitudinally.

That estimate describes an observational model relationship rather than a causal guarantee for an individual golfer. The study also warns that cross-sectional and longitudinal effects differ, so the result should not be read as proof that adding distance alone will lower every player’s score.

The LPGA Driving definition states that LPGA driving distance is average yards per measured drive, with measured drives taken on two holes per round. This definition helps explain why professional-tour distance statistics are specialized measurement series rather than a universal estimate of every drive played.
